WebbAbout. A large, partly-ruined collegiate minster church dating from 13thC-15thC. Fine nave and tower, ruined choir and chapter house. Work began in 1228 on the current Howden Minster, though it was not finished until the 15th century when the chapter house and top of the tower was added by Bishop Walter de Skirlaw. WebbAt Skirlaw's death it was unfinished, and the bishop bequeathed £40 for its completion. The late 15th century saw the tower's upper stage added, and a grammar school was built off the south nave aisle c. 1500. [1] [3] At the Reformation, the college was dissolved and Howden Minster became a parish church.
