The Penwith Society of Arts is an art group formed in St Ives, Cornwall, England, UK, in early 1949 by abstract artists who broke away from the more conservative St Ives School. It was originally led by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, and included members of the Crypt Group of the St Ives Society, including Peter Lanyon and Sven Berlin. WebThe Society was formed by members of the St. Ives Arts Club in 1927 as a result of a meeting held the previous year when a proposal had been put forward by George Fagan Bradshaw and Herbert Truman that a society should be established to further the interests and promote the work of the many artists living in the St. Ives area. WebKen joined both the Penwith Society and the Newlyn Society of Artists, and exhibited often with both. In 1980 they moved into a large old church which they converted into a marvellous living and working space, with storage racks for paintings on the entrance floor, and living quarters above.
